A trained medical professional, or someone who is trained by a trained medical professional, should perform flushing procedures for peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs) and implantable ports. Flushing protocols for valved and non-valved PICCs and ports are important to follow.

General Protocol for Flushing PICCs

Patients who have PICC lines need to have their catheter flushed at regular intervals, usually at a set frequency, or after each infusion or aspiration, whichever comes first.  Catheters should be flushed with saline and followed with a heparin lock.

General Protocol for Flushing Implantable Ports

Patients who have implanted ports generally need to have the portal and catheter flushed with saline, or sodium chloride followed by heparinized saline, depending upon the type of port. This should be done at regular intervals, usually every four weeks, to maintain the integrity of the system.
